Batdad's Book Club:Level One of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Ready Player One: Level One

Two weeks ago I laid out the first assignment for Batdad's Book Club. I decided to read Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. It is a Sci_Fi novel set in both a dystopian future and a virtual utopia. The book follows Wade Watts as he hunts for the ultimate video game Easter Egg.

Our Story So Far

The first Assignment was to read Level One (chapters 0000-0016). After reading the Chapters I noticed a natural story break at the end of chapter 0008. So I will separate this section into two parts (Level 1-1 and Level 1-2. I tried to stay light on spoilers. So, hopefully you read the book.

Prologue Level 1-0 (0000)

In the prologue the narrator recaps the entirety of the will of James Halliday, the inventor of the OASIS and avid 80's pop culture enthusiast. He tells everyone he has hidden an easter egg inside the OASIS. and that the winner of the hunt will receive his fortune and his company. There is a brief history of the hunt's immediate popularity and the waning popularity over 5 years until only a dedicated group of Egg Hunters (Gunters) remain. The last thing we find out is that the narrator found the first gate and this is his story.

Level 1-1 (0001-0008)

In this part of the story there is a ton of world/character building. The first chapter introduces us to a world where trailer homes are stacked in makeshift high rises and the world is very bleak. We also learn a little bit about the history of Wade Watts in this less than hospitable world.
The second chapter introduces us to Parzival, Wade's avatar, and the world of the OASIS. We learn about the sinister IOI Sixers (see what I did there?),corporate sponsored gunters looking to gain the prize for their employers. Wade also mentions a blogger he reads religiously and seems to have developed a crush on named Art3mis.
Chapter 0003 takes us to The Basement, a chat room created by Parzival's only friend, Aech. There is an awesome interaction between the two of them that made me think of all the nerduments I have gotten in with friends in the past.
In Chapter 0004 we learn about the parameters and scope of the OASIS. It is shaped like a Rubik's cube with 27 sectors each containing hundreds of planets. Each sector cube is exactly 10 light hours across so teleportation is the best means of travel available, but also costly.
Chapter 0005 provides us with a history of the creation of the OASIS including a little background on James Halliday. It explains the rise of the virtual world to the point where most of the human race now spent all their free time inside.
Chapter 0006 sees Wade giving us a run down of Annorak's Almanac. The references in this small chapter are staggering. It is basically a list of everything James Halliday likes that Wade has watched, studied, listened to,played, etc... to prepare him for any contingency in the Hunt.. The riddle from the will is also repeated in the almanac. Wade also found a limerick hidden in the text with notched letters. It spoke of finding a copper key in a tomb filled with horrors and taking a place among the high scorers.
Chapter 0007 has us in Wades Latin class and a translation of discere sets the wheels in motion for Wade to discover the first gate in the hunt. He finds a picture perfect recreation of the Tomb of Horrors D&D module on the planet where he goes to school. He gets a pass to attend a sporting event the school is participating in near the entrance and gets a voucher to teleport there. He straps his shield on and enters the Tomb.
Chapter 0008 reads like a guy running through a module he already has read. Wade sidesteps traps and collects gear. But, his worry is facing the Lich at the end of the adventure. His avatar is only 3rd level. It turns out not to be the case. He defeats the lich in a very different challenge and obtains the copper key and the next riddle. As he is running to the door footsteps approach.

Level 1-2 (0009-0016)

The other avatar is that of Art3mis. Wade recognizes her right away. There is some banter and discussion about the hunt. The two exchange info while Parzival tries to keep the secret of defeating the lich. As he is about to leave she yells at him and he checks the high score board, and there his name sits atop it. Art3mis casts a barrier spell so he cant leave and the two of them talk about what this means. Parzival gives her a tip for the challenge and he watches until the barrier dissipates and runs out the door.
Next the hunt takes us to one of the hometowns Halliday created in the OASIS. 1 of 256 copies of it to be exact. He finds Halliday's child hood home.  When he gets there Art3mis' name pops up on the high score list with 1000 less points than him. He plays a video game on James Halliday's old TRS-80 computer to reveal the first gate.
Parzival completes the challenge waiting for him inside the gate and a new riddle appears.By this time Wade realizes he has been awake for hours. He logs off and falls asleep in his hideout. He dreams of people charging toward him and tearing him to shreds to get to the egg. A bit of foreshadowing maybe.
Wade wakes up and logs back in and watches an interview with Ogden Morrow, the co creator of the OASIS, and Halliday's oldest friend. There is a brief history of his place in the world and how he had a falling out with Halliday. Aech calls Wade and informs him he figured out where the first key is. Wade wishes him luck and then reads an email from Artemis who had also finished the first gate while Wade slept. He responds and then begins studying the second riddle. But, his mind drifts back to Art3mis.
Aech made it through the first gate now. Soon after  another gunter tried to blackmail wade and Aech. He let the cat out of the bag on where they both went to school and shortly after the names Daito and Shoto appeared on the scoreboard. Endorsement offers come rolling in for Wade's avatar offering payment in OASIS credits.IOI also contacted him every minute since his name went up on the board. We are given a brief introduction to Nolan Sorrento, Head of Operations at IOI. They are trying to recruit Parzival. He agrees to the interview so he can tell them where to stick it.
Parzival arrives at the virtual offices of IOI and is immediately met by Sorrento. He gives him a sales pitch about joining IOI. Parzival denies 3 separate offers and then Sorrento drops a bombshell on him literally and figuratively. His home is destroyed. An explosion collapses his stack. Wade logs back in to warn Aech.
When he gets a hold of Aech, the Sixers are swarming Ludus, Parzival's school planet ,looking for the 1st key. They decide it is a goods idea to get Art3mis, Shoto and Daito together to warn them. We also find out that people are calling them the High Five. They watch as the sixers set up camp around the first keys tomb and discuss the threat on all their lives and decide to part ways with mutual respect but not working together.
The scoreboard began to fill up with Sixer ID  numbers. The gunter clans begin to assault the sixer encampment.Wade sets out on the road. He gets a bus ticket and creates a new identity. When he arrives in Columbus, headquarters of GSS, the company that runs the OASIS, and also real life HQ for IOI, he catches a cab to his new apartment. He makes a vow to not go outside until he finds the egg.

Discussion Questions

  • sixers have experts that they can swap out for different challenges allowing them to farm copies of the key and pass through the gates with ease. What makes wade so special that he did it on his own?
  • Daito mentions that any one of them ( High Five) could be a sixer spy....any guesses if that is true or who it is?
  • Did Wade make the right decision in calling Sorrento's "bluff"?
  •  Wade says he designed his avatar’s face and body to look more or less like his own. Then he lists a string of things that are different.  Has the OASIS warped his self perception?
  • Anonymity is a big part of the OASIS.Now the internet seems to be a place where we flaunt our true identities. It wasn’t always that way. Do you think we’ll revert to more anonymity one day?
  • The world setting is very bleak outside of the OASIS. Is this a future you see happening? If so will it happen by 2044?
  • The OASIS becomes a part of daily life for users around the globe. What virtual realms (Google,Facebook, flickr) do you depend on? Is it dangerous to mix profit and dependence on technology?
  • How does public school in the OASIS compare to your experience in school? Has author Ernest Cline created a solution to classroom overcrowding, student apathy, and school violence?
and 3 questions that will be asked throughout the book club...
  • Is Wade a strong main character? Did you like him? Find him believable? Interesting?
  • Were there any passages or scenes that you remember well or particularly liked? Were you surprised?

  • Do you Have any Questions?

Bonus Level

The film rights were purchased by Warner Bros. the same day Cline finalized his publishing deal with Random House, one year prior to the novel's publication. Steven Spielberg signed on to direct in March 2015.

Hope to see everyone again in 2 weeks for the end of level two.

Batdad's Book Club:Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

So a few weeks ago I posted my Loot crate unboxing. One of the things I got was a book titled Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. I mentioned that I intended on reading it and then discussing it in my blog. I do, and I will. But, I wanna try something. In celebration of having 150 people follow me on Facebook I am going to start a book club.

The First Rule of Book Club

Everyone should talk about Book Club. I have one comment among my 16 blog posts.  That sucks. I want to interact with all of you. Even if you don't read the book and want to read the blog articles for synopsis. Then weigh in on the subject matter. I am totally cool with that. Discussion will improve all of us. That is the main point of my blog after all.

If you do read the book tell me what you think. No spoilers though until the appropriate time. The book is split into 3 parts. So, I will do a 3 part blog on it. If you finish the book in one night don't tell me or anyone else what happens.

Choosing Books to Read

This particular book was something I mentioned reading and that is why I chose it for our first book club book. But, going along with the feedback from my reader friends from rule number one, I would love some input on this. I am unsure how to put polls in here. I might have to put one on my facebook page or something. But, if you have any suggestions for future books you would like to read and maybe others would like to read, please tell me in comments or on my Facebook page or somewhere.

I will accept suggestions from any genre. I love to read. Sci fi, fantasy, thrillers, fiction, non-fiction, gaming supplements, short stories, graphic novels, mystery, self help, whatever.put it in the comments here. I will figure out a way to have a poll in place. Then we will decide as a group what to read.

How do I plan on meeting up with all of you for  a book club?

When I started this blog I didn't exactly make an editing calendar or anything. So, this will be my first regular piece (hopefully). Tuesday seems like a perfect day for book club. Every 2 weeks to finish a third of a book seems like enough time. So, I will be back in 2 weeks with my review of Part One of Ready Player One. Hopefully I will have some blog viewers ready to discuss the book with me.

365 daysof Gaming Part 1

 The History

On my Facebook page I shared a news video which I can't seem to embed here. So follow the link if ya wanna watch it. But, it basically tells a small story of the board game renaissance that is taking place.

Board games are a great way to unplug from our technology soaked lives. They are a great way to socialize and connect with one another. They can be used as learning tools for children and adults. Besides, they are fun.

As I go through my history I will list some games I enjoyed and provide Wikipedia links where I can.

I have been an avid Gamer since I was a child. My uncle taught my brother and I Monopoly, which despite being a kind of deterrent to some people is still one of my favorite games. Nostalgia, and all that. I played Scattergories, Scrabble, Chess, Yahtzee, Life, Operation, Guess Who, Battleship and many other favorites.

Then I started playing more obscure games that we found at garage sales like Stop Thief! and Payday

When I was a teenager, I would go to a local game store after school with my friends. We played some role-playing games ( Vampire: the Masquerade, Werewolf: the Apocalypse, and Legend of the Five Rings to name a few). We also leaned about Live Action Role Playing through some of the same games with live action rules

We also learned some new board games from Europe ( Euro Games) like Settlers of Catan and Formula De

I also played my first Collectible Card Games around this time. My biggest collection was Legend of the Five Rings (yep, same setting as the RPG). but, I dabbled in Pokemon, Rage, Doomtown, Magi Nation, Illuminati, Vampire: the eternal struggle, 7th Sea, Legend of the Burning Sands and MLB Showdown

I didn't really play much Magic:the Gathering. But, it deserves mention as it was the game that started them all. As you can see if you read the articles many of these games were byproducts of RPG settings.

As I got older and I had other responsibilities I didn't play as many games as I liked. I did attend some Live Action Roleplaying games because they were free to go to and I had the books and wanted to socialize. Over the next few years I did that mainly. But, as I got older other people stopped going and I didnt recognize anyone.  Larping turned into more of a chore than a fun time with friends. So I quit going all the time and I lost interest.

For a brief period I played Warhammer 40K. But, this was an expensive hobby I couldn't afford to keep myself in.

After this period I didnt do much board gaming. I played Video Games. The RPG's were my favorite. But, I also enjoyed Madden, and some first person type games. This wasn't nearly as satisfying to me.  Maybe it is because I never really got into the headset talking  back and forth gaming. I even did some MMORPG's for a while. Every single time I lost interest when I had to start milling XP. I am a social gamer and this wasn't cutting it.

About 3-4 years ago my brother and I bought a new style of card game called an LCG or Living Card Game. This appealed to me for multiple reasons. I liked the card games I played when I was younger. I however did not like spending tons of money to find the cards I needed in a treasure hunt. So, the idea of having every card in the set and still being able to customize decks intrigued me.

My first investment was the Game of Thrones LCG. It was a significant amount of money to get started here. But, it was worth every penny. There was a league at my local gaming store. So my brother and I joined. My brother gave it up soon after. But, I met the most amazing group of people. We met for game nights outside of the league, where I learned a ton of new board games.(Bohnanza, King of Tokyo, Escape from Atlantis, Love Letter, Blood Bowl: Team Manager, Avalon, and Cash & Guns to name a few).

I became good friends with the main core group of people. We explored other LCG's together as they came out ( Star Wars, Netrunner, and now Warhammer : Conquest) always returning to Thrones. We attended Gaming conventions together. We have had gaming birthdays together.   We play racquetball together. But, at our core we play games and that is what binds us.We have played a new Star Wars RPG and I have a group playing RISK:Legacy. I have a lot of good things happening in my life right now. But, I am very thankful for the people I have met while playing games.

The Challenge

Originally this was a New Year's Resolution. Now it is a challenge. I challenged myself to play at least one game a day for the year. 365 days of gaming. We are halfway through march and I haven't missed a day yet. I have had some close calls and a slight rule change I will discuss later. I wanted to spend more time socializing with people and this is my favorite way to do that. That is the main reason for the challenge.

The Rules

  • No Video Games. More precisely Video games don't count. They taren't that social...even with a headset.
  • No solitary games. Be social.
  • The game has to start before midnight....but doesn't have to finish before midnight.(No, that doesn't count as 2 days of games.)
  • racquetball and other small team/1on1 games count because there is talking and socializing involved. ( this was a change I made after a racquetball session with my friends where we were too tired to play a traditional board game)

Progress

We are halfway through March and I haven't missed a day. Wonder Wife has been a superstar as has my friend Golden State Lantern. They have both played late night games with me to keep the streak alive.

I am keeping a spreadsheet with a journal and people I have played against/with. So far I have played 129 games over roughly 95 hours.

This has provided me with extra time with my family I wouldn't normally have.

If I haven't gotten a game in before I get home from work at night , I wake my wife up and we play a short 5-10 minute game. Usually ( Nuts, Fluxx, or Love Letters). Then, we get a chance to talk about the day before bed. Without this gaming challenge we probably would be doing this through texts as we remembered things that happened.

On weekends when my oldest son, Nightwing is with us we try to play at least one game of Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. When Wonder Wife works Saturdays, Nightwing and I try to get a game in while Robin naps.

This has also produced some impromptu games. When I went to the Stadium Series NHL game in San Jose we played a couple games of Fluxx at the transit center on a bus bench while waiting for other people to arrive. I also [played Guillotine in the break room at work on my lunch break with a coworker who I had never played games with.

So, if you see me around and we both have some time on our hands let's sit down and socialize over a board game.I am usually carrying or have easy access to a game for the purpose of this challenge. I haven't played Go Fish or War yet if anyone wants to challenge me.

I Challenge You

I would like to propose a challenge to anyone reading this. You don't have to be as extreme as I was/am. But, I challenge you to play games on a regular basis. Set your challenge for once a week. Or if you already play games once a week challenge yourself to go every day for 3 weeks.Basically step a little outside of your normal game playing habits. Socialize with family and friends. Hell, If ya want, play a game with me, for those of you in Southern California. (unless you want to pay for air fare, food, and other travel expenses) Let me know how ya do in the comments.

Remembering the Man in Black

On February 26, 1932 a great man was born. He wasn't born to wealthy parents or royalty.  He was born J.R. Cash. He was one of Seven children. He worked in cotton fields with his family from the age of 5. His family, like so many others struggled during the Great Depression. His older brother died at age 15 working in a mill. J.R. always felt the guilt of that, an early sign of the compassionate human being he was.

He began writing songs at the age of 12. Shortly after his 18th birthday he enlisted in the Air Force. He became a Morse Code intercept operator. He was the first to pick up the news of Joseph Stalin's death. he was honorably discharged when he was only 22.

He was by no means perfect. His drug and alcohol abuse, among other things, led to his divorce from his first wife. They had 4 daughters. The demons of drug and alcohol abuse would plague him for many years. He never served a prison sentence. But, he did land in jail 7 times on misdemeanor charges. After an attempted suicide where he crawled into a cave under the influence, trying to lose himself and "just die", He claims he felt God's presence and managed to struggle pout of the cave. June Carter and her mother and sister came to stay with him for  a month to help him conquer his addiction. In 1970 Cash ended all drug use for 7 years when his son John Carter Cash was born. He battled with addiction  entering rehab in1983, 1989, and 1992 (when his son would follow him a few months later).

By the early 1970s, he had cemented his public image as "The Man in Black". He regularly performed dressed all in black. In 1971, Cash wrote the song "Man in Black", to help explain his dress code.He wore black on behalf of the poor and hungry, on behalf of "the prisoner who has long paid for his crime", and on behalf of those who have been betrayed by age or drugs."And", Cash added, "with the Vietnam War as painful in my mind as it was in most other Americans', I wore it 'in mournin' for the lives that could have been.'... Apart from the Vietnam War being over, I don't see much reason to change my position... The old are still neglected, the poor are still poor, the young are still dying before their time, and we're not making many moves to make things right. There's still plenty of darkness to carry off." Here is the first performance of that song on the Johnny Cash show:

Johnny Cash and June Carter cash may be the greatest love story of all time in my opinion. He asked her to marry him onstage in Ontario Canada on February 22nd, 1968. They were married a week later on March 1.She stuck with him, despite his demons. He loved her more than life itself.

June Carter Cash died on May 15, 2003, at the age of 73. June had told Cash to keep working, so he continued to record, completing 60 more songs in the last four months of his life, and even performed a couple of surprise shows. At the July 5, 2003, concert (his last public performance), before singing "Ring of Fire", Cash read a statement about his late wife that he had written shortly before taking the stage:
The spirit of June Carter overshadows me tonight with the love she had for me and the love I have for her. We connect somewhere between here and heaven. She came down for a short visit, I guess, from heaven to visit with me tonight to give me courage and inspiration like she always has.

Johnny Cash died less than four months later. He was broken hearted over the loss of the woman he loved. That is my story and I am sticking to it.

Since I was a young boy the voice and lyrics of Johnny Cash have always resonated with me. So, today I wanted to celebrate the life of the Man in Black.

February Lootcrate Unboxing

My Lootcrate arrived while I was at the Stadium Series. What is a Lootcrate you ask? It is like a meat/book/CD/wine of the month club. You pay a subscription and they send you a box. This particular  subscription service gets you a themed box of fun nerdy things.
In the past I have received a Voltron t shirt, vinyl Funco figures, comic books, ninja turtles sunglasses, posters, magnets, etc. I am not getting  paid for this. I just think it is a really cool service and I want to share the experience.
This month's theme was Play. So the stuff I got was all gaming related. The pictures got put in backwards. But here is what I got.

The box itself was a game. They do this every month. They make the inside of the box into something that goes with the theme. It is a simple game where you go aro7nd the board collecting 5 things to pack your box. And if you land on a circle you can try to steal an opponents stuff to put in your box. Seems fun.I will probably use it for game piece storage.

Each box also includes a magazine with articles in the stuff you got, promotion for stuff you might want, and sometimes codes for online loot.

Each box also comes with a button.it has the month and the theme. Not sure what I will do with them. But, I am sure some lootcrate inspired art will take shape.

There was also a card in there with a code for a ship for firefly online. I never even jnew this existed. So, now I will probably be trying it. Job well done promo department.

A novel  about a dystopian future where gamers can play games and solve puzzles based in pop culture from the past (now). It looks very interesting.  I will give it a read and review it fir anyone who is interested.

Also, included was this neat little poster of a pacman cartridge dissasembled with the game inside.

This is one of my favorite pieces from this box. A pair of dice that has rock, paper, scissors on it. My wife and I play rock paper scissors all the time to settle small issues like who is going to the kitchen to get us drinks. These are also good for deciding 1st player in a 2 player game.

Superfight is a game I have been eyeing since I saw it at a booth at WonderCon. For anyone who has ever played Cards Against Humanity or Apples to Apples it is similar. Players are dealt a combination of  hero cards and attributes  they pick one of each to make a fighter. Then the arguing and lobbying happens and the table votes for a winner. The winner fights a 3rd players creation. This continues until one foghter wins 3 matches and retires. I hope to have many battles  at my dining room table.

The Hexbug is something I know nothing about.I think it goes more with the play theme than gaming.  I will probably give it to Nightwing or sell it in eBay.

This is also one of the cooler things in here.I got one for my wife for christmas to go next to our funko pop figure family of Batman Robin and Nightwing. It is a blank vinyl figure that you can create your own character on. Now that i have one and he is kinda chunky I think I will make a Fatdad figure.

This last (first) picture is how the box looked upon opening. This has to be one of the best boxes I have gotten so far. Cant wait for the next one.

Batdad goes to the Stadium Series: Los Angeles Kings vs. San Jose Sharks at Levi Stadium

I am taking a road trip. So, I am gonna try something. I am going to live tweet while I am on the trip.  If I have any spare time I will elaborate on my blog.
Tomorrow morning I will be getting up bright and early to go to the NHL Stadium Series game between the Los Angeles Kings and the San Jose Sharks. This will be an interesting experience.
I have never been to a hockey game (match?). It is on my bucket list (keep an eye out for that post). My friend bought me a ticket for Christmas after I expressed interest, but was unable to make the budget work for tickets.  Another thing I get to cross off my list is visiting another NFL stadium. It may be a new one. But, I can tell my grand kids about it in the same way my grandparents refer to Fenway, Ebbets, and Wrigley field. Wrong sport, same concept.
The plan is my friend, the Golden State Lantern, (having an unfortunate predilection for certain Bay area sports organizations ) is picking me up at 430 A.M.  Then we are off to pick up a friend and coworker of his I have never met. I have been assured that we will get along just fine.
We plan to drive all morning to meet his dad for lunch at 2 P.M. The game starts at 7 P.M. So we may have a little time to kill. Then I get to witness my first real life hockey game.
After the game we hop back in the car. We will do the road trip in reverse. Did anyone else get a fun mental image of that? All of this so that I can be back in time for work at Noon on Sunday. My friend, like Hal Jordan or Kyle Rayner, is always willing to shine his light into my darkest nights. For that, I thank him.
If you are interested in following  along on Twitter, my Twitter handle is @fatdad2batdad. Here we go:
I worked until 10:30pm and got home around 11:00 and was in bed with a 4 a.m. alarm set close to midnight.

That 4a.m. alarm didn't do so well. My wife came into the living room where I was sleeping (so I wouldn't wake her up at 4 a.m. OOps!)and told me GSL (short for Golden State Lantern) was outside. I asked what time it was
"5 A.M." she said.
My ass flew off the couch as I scrambled to get everything I would need for the trip together. I had prepared a little the day before. My wife called GSL and told him he could come in and wait for me. I apologized profusely in the background. My lovely wife talked me down because I felt like I was ruining the whole trip. I got in the car and we went to pick up GSL's friend. He got in the car and we were introduced. The guy had a jacket with a Clash patch and a Batman button on it. I was sold. We hit the road and I tried to figure out some things on how to live tweet on my phone. The tweeting portion went great. The posting tweets to my blog portion not so much.
We stopped at a small place named BeaBeas Breakfast Kitchen. I would recommend it for anyone in the area. We had nice conversation and great breakfast. I got an omelet and fruit with a side of bacon. I felt it was a good healthy choice for a long day.

See above.

On Facebook there is a few pictures to go along with this. We walked into Harris Ranch and a huge counter of cookies and cakes and chocolates. I had thoughts of getting carrot cake but it was huge. Then I thought maybe one chocolate chip cookie. But, my willpower got me through and I had beef jerky and Seaweed snacks I packed to go with me.

It is usually a very sad sight driving through this part of California. It was still quite brown. But, this time the trees all had white blossoms which looked kinda cool. The signs begging for water  to come to the area were still ever present, reminding us of the drought our state is in.

I knew this was gonna be rough. I was heading into enemy territory. I had on a Kopitar T-shirt and a Kings hat. I might be a little antagonistic. I might have a death wish. I am definitely looking forward to feeding off the rivalry.

Part of my new years resolution was to play games more. I will elaborate on this in another post. But, we sat on a bus bench and a childhood boy scout friend of GSL's arrived and we started playing Fluxx ( an excellent short fun game for anyone) until his dad arrived so we could go to lunch. I thought I tweeted about lunch. But, maybe not. Maybe I was feeling guilty. We went to a place called Antipasto's. The staff seemed a little rude, but not mean. They seemed like family busting chops. The food was delicious. Each of us got half of our meal to go. Only two of the six of us left with any food. Only one of us had any left when we got to the stadium, and that was because he put his meatball sandwich in the car and didn't have access to it. I got an Italian sausage with peppers and onions to eat there as a side. I got tortellini with alfredo sauce to eat later. later happened about 10 seconds after I finished my sausage. I would definitely recommend this place if you are in San Jose.

We got on the train at Alum Rock station and we were to transfer to another train at Tasman Station. There were maybe 4 other people on our train to begin with. when we got to great mall it was packed. When we arrived at Tasman station there was a train across the platform that was headed where we wanted to go. But, it was also packed. So we waited for the next one. A man with a bullhorn came over and let us all know that every train coming our way was full, and that the buses across the street would get us there no problem. So we rode a bus the rest of the way and stopped just before the bridge to the stadium.

I stopped at the top of the bridge and stepped out onto the platform that would have led up from the train we were supposed to be on and snapped a picture of this new Stadium. Definitely nice looking outside. Though I suspect it was teeming with combinations of teal and red and gold inside. I prepared myself for the line to get in that usually accompanies these things, and it never came. We were inside almost immediately.

Once we were in the stadium my friend and his father took us over to the 49ers museum. I was a little unsure on whether I wanted to spend $15 to see a museum about a team I am  less than thrilled about. But, GSL got in front and bought my ticket. I am glad he did. any sports history is fun to learn about. We watched a short movie on the history of the 49ers complete with crowd reactions to Marie DeBartolo and Jed York. Then the actual museum had a mini hall of fame vibe to it, with statues of the players in action poses that you could take pictures with. There was an interactive section on the lower floor where you could test your combine skills, kick field goals, do a touchdown dance, dance with the niners cheerleaders, get yourself put into a virtual uniform, and be a booth announcer. The most impressive thing there was a hallway lined with memorabilia. On the ceiling were a bunch of footballs from one end to the other. These were Jerry Rice's touchdown balls......with the 49ers. It was truly a sight worth seeing. There were also some trophies and rings.

On the way in to the museum to the right was  the hockey sweaters for the Stadium series game we were about to witness. I took a picture of the Kings one.

As we walked into the stadium, which was  as gorgeous, maybe even more, on the inside as it was outside I started noticing the vendors for food. The first sighting was a Vegan Dog cart.  Then I took this picture of the Seafood stand next to the Curry stand. They also had hot dogs, beer, pizza, garlic fries, Italian sausage, brats, cracker jacks, [peanuts, and other traditional fare. But, I got a chuckle out of some of the more Bay area choices.

I didnt count them. But, I am guessing the amount of stairs I climbed to the 300 section was roughly 5 billion. i have to applaud the marketing team or whoever makes the decision to put a beer cart at the top of the stairs though. I bought a beer and whiskey and diet coke (still trying to watch my girlish figure).

There wasn't a bad seat in the house as far as I could tell. If anything, for a hockey game the lower seats that were so far from the ice may have had worse views.

Here we go. My first ever actual live hockey game. It was so cool watchign the Kings skate onto the ice. My heart started beating faster.  I was very excited.....then this happened:

I didnt even see the puck go in. there was no buzzer. there was no light. some people were cheering and some booing. but it wasn't very loud. I think a lot of people didnt know what happened until they saw the players slow down. It seemed like the first ten minutes of the game they were getting some kink s out of the sound system and scoreboard. The goal was reported on the scoreboard roughly 5 minutes later.I was still excited though.

Here is the beer and cocktail I mentioned. I got 2 so I wouldn't have to leave my seat.

The sharks scored a goal late in the period and it stayed tied until the end of the period.

I was very excited for this. It was a pleasant surprise. I love CCR. That is music my mom and dad played a lot when I was a kid. I sang along to every song. I wiggled in my seat a little. He put on a good show.

He did have the worst racoon eye tan I have seen in a while.

They announced that Melissa Etheridge would do a special tribute to Janis Joplin at second intermission. I was looking forward to it. Unfortunately my bladder got the better of me. I heard a little bit of  "come to my window". But, I missed the Janis part.

The second period was BOOORING! The Sharks seemed like they were dominating. But, they couldn't land a shot behind Johnathan Quick.

The third period was way more exciting. The sound issues had been resolved and when the Kings scored myself and every King fan in the place (which wasn't many) exploded. The rest of the period was fast paced and exciting. The Sharks gave a great effort and Quick just kept saving shot after shot.

ummm the game ended. Kings won. As, I was walking down the billion stairs, just before I reached the concourse I saw a slow moving sea of teal. I felt for them. I have experienced the agony of defeat. I am glad the game was close. I enjoyed the hell out of it. Then I got a text from GSL. His seats weren't in the same section as mine.

"start walkin"

I chuckled a little and met up with him on the concourse where we made our way out of the stadium.

Remember the guy with the bullhorn earlier? He told us it should be better when ya leave. People will be trickling out. I doubted him then. Turns out my doubts were not unfounded. since when do people trickle out of an event. People can arrive anytime they want for something. But, the thing happens and when it ends they have no reason to be there anymore. Mass exodus. The crowd getting on the trains creeped forward slowly. At first we had trouble figuring out whether we were going to the trains or the parking lot. Neither was clearly marked. We finally arrived at the barricaded line for the Alum Rock train. Once we got to the front we found out that we were getting on buses across te street. There was a little confusion as to which stops the bus would make. But we were assured they would hit all stops. So we got on a bus and headed back to Alum Rock station.

We arrived at the car and acquired caffeine at the nearby liquor store. When we couldn't find a bathroom we lived out our lifelong homeless bum fantasy. (this is the first time I have ever peed in an alley... promise)

I had time for one more post before shuffling off to dreamland. We did make the stops, and I barely woke up a little at each one. I sadly do not drive manual transmission. SO, I slept almost the entire way home.

Once we dropped off GSL's friend and got to my house I thanked GSL for the trip and dragged myself in the house. I climbed into bed and slept  for about 2 or 3 hours and woke up to go back to work. WORTH EVERY SECOND!!!!!
